But when she arrived to open the shop, her heart dropped.
The wooden sign out front—hand-painted by her late father—was gone.
Not taken down. Gone.
No note. No clue. The only thing left behind was just an empty hole and the nail lying on the ground.
Lanie felt a knot of worry twist in her stomach. That sign meant more than decoration—it was a piece of her father’s love, a reminder that he’d always believed in her dreams.
She took a steadying breath. This was a mystery worthy of a Bluejean Teacup.
With a cup of chamomile in hand, Lanie called her friends Bea, June, and Martha. The three arrived in minutes, ready to brainstorm not just ideas—but kindness and encouragement.
Just then, Calvin Briggs walked by carrying something long and flat under a canvas tarp.
Jane frowned. “It looks like a sign.”
Lanie didn’t want to jump to conclusions. She decided to talk to him.
She found him at his stall, sanding a plank. “Calvin, can I ask you something?”
He looked up, surprised. “Sure.”
“Did you happen to see anything unusual this morning? Or… pick up anything that wasn’t yours?”
The sander stopped. He sighed. “I took the sign.”
The girls exchanged glances.
Calvin set down the sander. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I just… I thought it was beautiful. Reminded me of the sign my dad used to have in our shop. He passed away last year. I guess I just got sentimental.”
He pulled the note from his pocket. “I wasn’t trying to steal it. I just wanted to thank you for making Willow Creek feel like home. And honor fathers the way you do.”
Lanie’s heart softened. “You could have just told me.”
He nodded. “I know.”
They talked a long time. By the end, Calvin helped her sand and repaint the sign, and even added a new wooden piece. He promised to make it special.
The next morning, Lanie hung the blue sign back up—better than ever.
And Calvin? He stayed with Willow Creek, became a friend, and every year after that, he donated a handmade gift for the Tea for the Dads.
Sometimes the people we least expect… are the ones who need a little grace the most.

The History of Father’s Day
Father’s Day is a special time to honor and thank the men who love, lead, and guide us. While Mother’s Day has been celebrated for centuries, Father’s Day is a more recent tradition.
The idea began in the early 1900s in Spokane, Washington, thanks to a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd. She wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran, who raised his six children as a single parent with strength, faith, and love after their mother died. Inspired by her father’s devotion, she believed fathers deserved a day of recognition too.
The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910. It was unofficial at first, but the idea grew in popularity. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a national holiday in the United States—to be celebrated on the third Sunday in June.
Today, Father’s Day is celebrated around the world in many different ways, but the meaning is the same—a time to honor the godly example, love, and sacrifice of fathers and father figures.
