Bluejean Corner
The Teacup and Bluejean Corner Cozy Mysteries
The Secret Beneath the June Roses – Part Two
That evening, after the last guest had gone home and the garden lanterns flickered softly beneath the trees, Sharon remained alone on the patio at Bluejean Corner.
The old wooden box sat beside her teacup.
The warm June wind carried the scent of roses and jasmine through the garden as she carefully unfolded another letter from inside the box.
Most of the notes were unsigned.
But one was different.
At the very bottom, written in delicate faded ink, were the initials:
E.M.
Sharon paused.
“Emma Mae…” she whispered softly.
The name stirred an old memory.
Years earlier, before Bluejean Corner had ever existed, the property had belonged to Emma Mae Whitaker — a woman known throughout St. George for inviting neighbors into her garden for afternoon tea. People often said she had a gift for noticing sorrow before anyone else could see it.
As Sharon continued reading the letters, one small envelope slipped from inside a photograph.
In younger days, Emma Mae stood beside the same rose arbor that still grew in the garden today. She smiled as children, neighbors, travelers, and friends gathered around tiny tea tables beneath strings of lanterns.
On the back of the photo was written:
“For the day someone else needs this garden again.”
Suddenly Sharon understood.
The box had not been hidden recently at all.
It had been buried years before beneath the rose arbor by Emma Mae herself.
But the mystery of the silver key still remained.
Who had placed it beneath the roses that morning?
The next afternoon, Sharon walked next door carrying a basket of scones for Mr. Bennett, the elderly neighbor who had lived beside the garden longer than anyone else.
When she mentioned the silver key, he smiled quietly into his tea.
“I suppose,” he said gently, “that mystery belongs to me.”
Sharon blinked in surprise.
Mr. Bennett explained that years ago, before Emma Mae passed away, she had entrusted him with the key and asked him to wait until someone needed the garden again.
For many years, he had kept the key inside an old Bible drawer, unsure when the right morning should come.
But when he noticed Sharon repairing the garden once more beneath the June roses, he knew the time had finally arrived.
The silver key had always belonged to the faded blue ribbon box — a reminder that kindness should be rediscovered, shared, and never locked away.
Sharon smiled. “Not unlocked, but rediscovered.”
Mr. Bennett nodded and glanced back toward the garden.
“Emma Mae’s garden never really been about a hidden box.
It’s always been about love.”
And on quiet evenings, passed from one heart to another, the garden still whispered. Bluejean Corner will host the June Garden Tea again — when the roses smell sweet and the lanterns glow beneath the trees.
Guests will sip tea, enjoy the scones, and leave behind notes of encouragement for someone else.
Because sometimes, the mysteries we find are not meant to frighten us.
They are simply meant to remind us we are loved.
